Shantou: the university and the medical college

Shantou University is a public comprehensive university in Guangdong, on China’s southeastern coast. Founded in 1981, it is jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong’s provincial government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Its medical college, usually called SUMC, has its own international admissions office and clinical training arrangements.

For a school-leaver considering medicine, the useful starting point is the college’s official 2026 undergraduate brochure. It lists English-taught Clinical Medicine with a five-to-six-year duration, but sets additional conditions for the shorter route. Do not choose a budget or graduation date from an agent’s “five-year MBBS” headline alone.

Read this first if you hope to practise in the UK

The UK General Medical Council currently lists Shantou University Medical College among institutions whose primary medical qualifications it does not accept. This is a material restriction for a UK career plan. Read the GMC’s own notice and obtain direct clarification before making a commitment. A Chinese MOE listing does not remove this restriction.

MBBS, dentistry and the five-year question

Programmes listed in SUMC’s 2026 international undergraduate brochure
ProgrammePublished language and duration
Clinical MedicineEnglish; 5–6 years, subject to entry route and university approval.
Clinical MedicineChinese; 5 years in the programme table. Confirm the academic entry conditions for your case.
Optometry MedicineEnglish; 5 years in the programme table. A separate course focused on eye care, not dentistry.
NursingChinese; 4 years, Bachelor of Science.

The brochure’s eligibility section says applicants for five-year programmes should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Science. Its course text also discusses a first-year waiver subject to academic approval. Because the wording is not identical across sections, school-leavers should plan around the six-year Clinical Medicine route until SUMC confirms their exact placement in writing. A science degree does not itself guarantee advanced standing.

Is there an English BDS with a scholarship?

An international English-taught BDS or Stomatology intake is not listed in this brochure. The medical college has a dental hospital, and dentistry appears within clinical teaching, but neither establishes a separate international BDS admission offer. No BDS-specific scholarship was verified. Ask for a university-issued programme notice naming the degree, language, duration and funding before paying for such an offer.

The medicine curriculum combines body systems, disease mechanisms, clinical skills and hospital subjects, followed by internship. Students learn Chinese and Medical Chinese. The brochure requires international clinical internships in SUMC-affiliated hospitals, where Chinese is the working language; English-medium study does not mean English-only patient care.

Admissions: dates, tests and documents

2026 deadline: closed. Next intake: not yet verified.

The official deadline for the autumn 2026 undergraduate intake was 31 May 2026. That date has passed. As of our 22 October 2026 review, we have not verified a 2027 opening date or closing date. Do not treat an old application calendar as an upcoming offer.

The 2026 guide generally requires foreign nationality, a valid passport, a high-school diploma or higher qualification and an age of 18–30, with stated exceptions. It also specifies health and background documentation, and additional nationality evidence in some cases. Eligibility and admission are separate decisions.

CSCA and language evidence

The brochure requires CSCA Mathematics plus Chemistry or Physics (at least one of the latter two). English-taught applicants take English papers and do not need the Professional Chinese paper under this notice. Chinese-taught applicants need the appropriate Chinese papers, including Professional Chinese STEM. Verify future test dates through CSCA’s official website.

For non-native English speakers, the 2026 guide accepts IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL 80, a previous English-medium education certificate or equivalent evidence, subject to assessment. The Chinese route specifies HSK 4 at 180 and HSKK Intermediate at 60, or accepted alternatives. These are dated requirements, not a promise that every future intake will use the same rules.

Prepare the signed application, passport, qualifications and transcripts, CSCA result, language evidence, personal statement, CV, recommendation, photograph, health and background records, financial evidence and any required certified translations. Use the full official checklist for guardian and nationality-specific requirements.

The published process is document review, online interview, identity checks and pre-admission, followed by the necessary approvals for the official offer and JW202 visa document. The brochure gives [email protected] for applications and enquiries. Confirm the next intake first; do not send payment merely because an old brochure includes bank details.

Fees and the costs beyond tuition

The amounts below come from the official 2026 brochure. They are a dated reference, not a confirmed 2027 quotation. Room allocation depends on the teaching stage and campus; the cheapest room price is not the price for every year.

Build your own study budget

This planner starts with the 2026 English Clinical Medicine tuition, the clinical-campus room rate and selected published charges. The same room rate and tuition are applied across years for illustration. Replace them with your confirmed offer and an average accommodation allowance reflecting campus changes. Living expenses start at zero and must be added.

Enter your costs and calculate an illustrative RMB / PKR / USD / AED budget.

This is a planning tool, not a university invoice. It does not deduct an unawarded scholarship or predict future fee increases and exchange rates.

Scholarships: what the published guide actually offers

Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship

The 2026 guide describes a one-off undergraduate award of RMB 10,000Currency estimates loading… for eligible self-funded international students. It is competitive, available to successfully admitted students and subject to university assessment and the provincial decision. It is not an automatic tuition discount and should not be deducted from your budget before an award letter arrives.

The guide describes a usual July–August application call and November–December results. Those are general timings, not a verified new application window. Academic standing, age, documentation and other scholarship restrictions apply; read the complete terms.

Chinese Government Scholarship: a different route

SUMC’s brochure describes Type A applications through the relevant home-country receiving agency and states that undergraduate scholarship students take Chinese-taught credit courses. Do not advertise this as a guaranteed fully funded English MBBS. The agency’s deadlines, selection and annual review rules apply. Consult the China Scholarship Council and the responsible agency in your country.

07

Is there a six-month pre-medical course?

We did not verify a six-month preparation course that guarantees progression into Shantou’s English Clinical Medicine degree. A separate official 2026 international medical foundation notice describes one year of preparation in China, after which students may independently apply to medical or dental programmes at overseas partner institutions.

That route is different from direct international undergraduate admission to SUMC. Its notice gave an application period ending in August 2026, or earlier when full; that window has passed. Check applicant eligibility, destination university, progression conditions, total fees and professional recognition separately. A foundation enrolment is not an MBBS place.

Campus life: look at the right campus

SUMC’s accommodation schedule distinguishes the Sangpushan campus, East Coast campus and medical-college campus. Theoretical and clinical teaching can therefore mean different living arrangements. Ask which address applies to each stage of your own course, how campus moves are handled and whether room allocation is confirmed.

Hostels, food and everyday routines

The published room types are four-bed, three-bed and twin rooms according to campus and stage. Before choosing, request current photographs of the assigned building, bathroom arrangements, cooking rules, laundry, internet and utility charges. For cafeteria meals, ask about actual menus and any dietary requirements directly; we have not verified halal certification or a guaranteed meal plan.

The international office publishes campus notices covering canteen opening, library hours and shuttle services. These are more useful for planning daily life than assuming every facility runs the same schedule throughout the year. Ask about sports-ground access, gym charges and the distance from your allocated hostel.

About the photographs in this guide

The entrance and library photographs are genuine, credited images. We have not yet secured verified reusable photographs of the assigned hostels, cafeterias, sports grounds, laboratories or hospitals. Those categories remain incomplete; no generated facility images are presented as real.

09

Clinical teaching, hospitals and distinctive strengths

SUMC’s 2026 brochure describes a Simulated Medical Center and Human Life Science Hall, with simulation models, multimedia learning and standardised-patient teaching. These facilities support practice before and alongside patient-facing work. The integrated curriculum links systems-based study to clinical reasoning, rather than treating anatomy, disease and bedside decisions as entirely separate stages.

The medical college’s hospital directory includes the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals, oncology hospital, mental-health centre, international eye centre and dental hospital. A hospital’s presence in the network does not guarantee an individual student a placement in every department.

Eye care is a particular area to investigate: the brochure identifies the Joint Shantou International Eye Center, associated with Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as a teaching base for ophthalmology and optometry. Students choosing that programme should verify the degree’s professional pathway in the country where they intend to work.

Ranking, with the edition attached

Times Higher Education’s university profile lists Shantou in the 801–1000 band in the World University Rankings 2027, as checked on 22 October 2026. This is an overall university ranking, not an MBBS-only position, graduate licensing result or guarantee of admission.

10

Recognition: check the destination before the deposit

Shantou appears in China’s 2023–24 MOE English-medium undergraduate medicine list. That dated list supports its historical inclusion among the 44 institutions; it does not by itself establish every condition of a future intake.

For Pakistan, check the current PM&DC foreign-study and graduate-registration requirements before enrolling. Obtain advice for your exact institution, course, entry qualification and admission year. An admission letter and eligibility to practise medicine are different things.

For the UK, the GMC non-acceptance listing described above needs particular attention. For any other destination, consult its medical regulator rather than relying on “worldwide recognition”. WDOMS is a directory, and WHO is not an MBBS university approval service.

If you are comparing options, read our Guangzhou Medical University guide and Zhengzhou University guide alongside the MBBS in China overview. Compare the specific course and licensing pathway, not just the annual fee.

Questions families ask

Is Shantou MBBS five or six years?

The official 2026 brochure lists English Clinical Medicine at 5–6 years and sets science-degree and academic-approval conditions for the shorter route. School-leavers should obtain written confirmation of their six-year course and internship plan.

Are applications open for the next intake?

The verified autumn 2026 deadline was 31 May 2026 and has passed. We have not verified the next opening or closing date. Contact the medical college for a current notice.

Is a BDS scholarship confirmed?

No international English BDS intake or BDS-specific scholarship was verified in the 2026 undergraduate brochure. A dental hospital is not evidence of an international BDS offer.

Can English-medium students avoid learning Chinese?

No. The brochure requires Chinese and Medical Chinese, with a specified proficiency level before the final-year internship. Affiliated hospitals use Chinese for clinical work.

Does MOE listing mean the degree is accepted in the UK?

No. The GMC currently lists Shantou University Medical College among institutions whose primary medical qualifications it does not accept. Check the linked regulator notice before making a UK career plan.
