Today’s Xi’an Jiaotong University is a comprehensive research-oriented university with a focus on science and engineering. It is a C9 League university with strengths in engineering, technology, management, and public health located in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. It is also a Chinese Ministry of Education Class A Double First Class University. It consists of 17 schools, offering 74 undergraduate programs, 199 master programs, and 114 doctoral programs.

In 2007, the number of full-time undergraduate students was over 17,000, and that of graduate students was nearly 13,000. Over 1100 international students from about 50 countries studied at the university. XJTU’s twenty schools offer programs in nine areas: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, art, law, philosophy, and education. Since the 1930s, XJTU has been referred to as “The MIT of the East.”

About Xi’an Jiaotong University

Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China and is one of the oldest universities in China. XJTU, as one of the first batches of universities in China, was supported by the Central Government in the seventh and eighth five-year plans, as well as China’s “Project 211” and “Project 985” to develop into a world-class university. At this time, Xi’an Jiaotong University is on the List of World-class Universities and First-class Disciplines released in 2017 by the Ministry of Education of China, as a Double First-class University in Category A, which means that the government will support it financially to develop into a world-class university and its eight disciplines into the first-class level in the world.

Research in science and technology at XJTU is directed primarily at satisfying the country’s most important needs, forging into international frontiers, and enhancing the technological competitiveness of China. Since 2000, researchers from XJTU have led 21 research projects supported by “Program 973”, and 4,830 research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

XJTU is a comprehensive research university with 10 major categories of disciplines: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, education, and art, and 27 schools, 9 university colleges for undergraduates, and 19 affiliated teaching hospitals. The University has a faculty and staff of 5,982 people including 3,072 full-time teachers, of whom 35 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and/or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 Nationally Distinguished Teachers, and 112 scholars of National Thousand Talents.

Xi’an is the ancient capital of China during and at the start of the famous Silk Road. It is also the home to the famous Terracotta Warriors. Xi’an is the largest city in Northwest China, and has been developing considerably in recent years as part of China’s “Go West Campaign”. Xi’an has re-emerged as an important cultural, industrial, and educational center of the central-northwest region, with facilities for research and development, national security, and China’s space exploration program.

Xi’an Jiaotong University Campuses

Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has three campuses:

1. The Xingqing campus
2. The Yanta campus
3. The Qujiang campus

These campuses are covering a total area of about 2 million square meters. The total constructed area is 2.0385 million square meters. Accommodation for international students of Xi’an Jiaotong University is offered on two campuses – Yanta Campus and Xingqing Campus. Except for Medical and financial major students, students in other disciplines all live in the XIngqing Campus.
