Henan University of Chinese Medicine Chinese: 河南中医药大学 Hénán Zhōngyīyào dàxué) is a public university in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. One of the earliest of its kind in China, Henan University of Chinese Medicine was established in 1958. It was authorized by the State Academic Council to confer bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and to collaborate with other universities or colleges in enrolling doctorate students. It was approved by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students as well as students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
The university offers bachelor’s degrees in medicine, management, engineering science, and arts with 14 specialties as Chinese medicine, herbology, pharmaceutical engineering, acupuncture and tuina, integrated Chinese-Western medicine, and public management. It also offers master’s degrees in 21 specialties, including Chinese internal medicine, Chinese pediatrics, herbal prescriptions, herbology, acupuncture and Tuina are the key programs of Henan Province.
The university faculty includes 15 doctoral tutors, 94 professors, 425 associate professors, 714 lecturers on campus, and 16 state-nominated and 10 province-nominated distinguished specialists.There are over 10,000 students including over 150 international students.
It has 20 laboratories and three hospitals besides a central lab, a herbal plantation for quality control, a pharmaceutical factory, and specimen rooms. Institutions have been established in this university in the studies of Zhang Zhong-jing’s theories, AIDS, hepatic diseases, gerontology, splenic and gastric diseases, pediatrics, rheumatoid arthritis, and ophthalmology.The library has a collection of over 500,000 volumes and over 2,000 periodicals from home and abroad.
Henan is the cradle of Chinese nation and Chinese culture. Henan university of Chinese medicine was established in 1958, formerly Henan provincial training college of Traditional Chinese Medicine, originated in1955 in Kaifeng City. As the second batch of national colleges and universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine, HUCM has 4 campuses with an area of 262.75 acres. The university was listed in Midwestern Higher Education Revitalization Plan, co-sponsored university by province and ministry, the first batch of university conferring Master’s Degree, enrolling students from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.HUCM achieved excellent prizein Assessment of Work Level of Undergraduate Teaching in Colleges and Universities by Ministry of Education. Following the guide of the law of higher education and the development of higher education of Chinese medicine, by improving the structure of academic disciplines, the university has developed into the formation of a multidisciplinary coordinated development of the school structure with coordinated multi-disciplinary educational programs in medicine, technology, management, engineering and art with traditional Chinese medicine as the main body.
There is a competent and excellent teaching faculty in HUCM, and among them, 4 were awarded national great master of TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine), 1 candidate for New Century Talents Project, and three candidates for National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program. Forty-four scholars at home and abroad employed as tenured professor, chair professor. There are twenty-four key disciplines approved by state administration of TCM and 1 advanced characteristic discipline of Henan province.
HUCM consists of 18 schools (departments and centers) including School of Basic medicine, School of pharmacy, No.1 clinical medical school. The university has 24 majors conferring bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor degree and been approved as post doctoral research station, which has developed into a complete system of training TCM talent guidelines. Recruiting students from more than thirty provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan in China and abroad, HUCM has over 19,000 full-time students and cultivated over 90,000 talents of Chinese medicine for the society. The university library has a collection of 1,600,000 books. There are three directly affiliated hospitals, 7 indirectly affiliated hospitals and 127training bases.
Due to the emphasis of teaching and research, the university has owned twenty-nine provincial-level scientific and research platforms including international science and technology base of Ministry of Science and Technology, State clinical research base of TCM. In recent years, the university has won four National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology. The theoretical research and clinical efficacy of TCM in the prevention and treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, the prevention and treatment of AIDS of traditional Chinese medicine, the academic level and comprehensive strength of TCM Pediatrics take the lead in China.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine
ounded in 1953, the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine (also called Henan Children’s Hospital of the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Henan Rehabilitation Hospital of the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine) is the earliest built comprehensive hospital of Chinese Medicine in Henan province, with missions of medical treatments, teaching, scientific research, prevention, health care and rehabilitation, etc. It is a national tertiary A-level Chinese Medicine hospital, a national clinical research base of Chinese Medicine, a national international cooperation and exchange base of Chinese Medicine, a construction unit of the national regional medical center (pediatric department), a national base of Chinese medicinal preparations and preparation modification, a national standardized training base for Chinese Medicine residents, a national training base for clinical pharmacists, a national training base for clinical Chinese Medicine pharmacists and a post-doctoral research center.
The hospital has 38 clinical departments, 47 wards, 13 medical technical departments and 2,600 approved beds. There is Henan Consultation Center of Chinese Internal Medicine and Henan Pediatric Consultation Center of the integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. In recent years, 77 national scientific projects have been hosted. In 2013, the scientific research project “Establishment and Application of Comprehensive Syndrome System of the Coronary Heart Disease” jointly completed by the hospital and other institutions won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. Projects “Research and Application of the diagnosis and treatment law and the evaluation of curative effects of the elderly community-acquired pneumonia” and “Innovation and Application of Key Techniques for TCM Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” successively won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress in 2012 and 2015, and made a breakthrough in the national scientific and technological progress award in the field of medical and health care in our province. 26 granted provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards fully demonstrate the academic level and innovation of Chinese Medicine in the prevention and treatment of major difficult diseases.
Currently, there are more than 2,200 professionals, 2 candidates for the national “Talents Project”, 2 middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions granted by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, 24 national famous elderly TCM doctors and 14 famous TCM doctors in Henan Province, 17 experts enjoying the special government allowance awarded by the State Council. A well-structured innovative high-quality clinical research talent team with a combination of elderly, middle-aged, and young talents has been formed.

The Second Clinical Medicine School offers 4 specialties, which are Chinese Medicine, General Practice of Chinese Medicine, Medical Imaging Technology, Science of Health Preserving of Chinese Medicine. The specialty of Chinese Medicine was established in 1958. At present, it has developed itself into a specialty covering undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral education. It is a famous specialty in Henan higher education, a characteristic specialty in higher education of Ministry of Education,apilot project of Ministry of Education in comprehensive specialty reform. In 2013, it enrolled the first batch of undergraduates. The specialtyof MedicalImaging Technology was established in 2013, offering four-year undergraduate programs. In 2017, it was entitled to enrolling undergraduates along with the first-tier universities. The specialty of Science of Health Preserving of Chinese Medicine was founded in 2017 and will start to enroll undergraduates in 2018 along with the first-tier universities.
The faculty mainly consists of full-time and part-time teachers.There are 70 full-time faculty memberscurrently,of which36hold senior professional titles, 33 intermediate and 1 junior title. 64 teachers have Master’s or doctoral degree, accounting for 91.43% of the full-time teachers. The Third Clinical Medical School, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, The Third Affiliated Hospital Henan University of Chinese Medicine was developed out of the Teaching and Research Section of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in 1958. It began to offer Master’s programs in 1979, being one of first batch of colleges to recruit postgraduate candidates for Chinese medicine in China. Founded in 1984, the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was merged with The Third Affiliated Hospital in 1999. It aims to cultivate talents in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, combining medical treatment and teaching.
Since 2000，the discipline of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina has been selected as provincial key discipline for 3 consecutive years, The school has been running doctoral programs jointly with other institutions. In 2005, it was accredited as the base for TCM continuing education under Henan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2009, it was accredited as specialty-construction unit by the Ministry of Education. The teaching team of acupuncture and moxibustion won provincial awards and the course of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was enlisted in the provincial bilingual demonstration classes. In 2012, it was selected as key discipline construction unit of “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” set by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Henan Shao’s inheritance studio of acupuncture and moxibustion is the first batch of inheritance studio of TCM academic schools. The inheritance studio of acupuncture manipulation an intangible cultural heritage was also set up.
In 2014, the school began to enroll doctorate candidates for acupuncture and moxibustion. The specialty of acupuncture and moxibustion is one of the feature specialties in Henan. As the origin of TCM culture, Henan province holds acupuncture and moxibustion as one of the important means for international exchanges and cooperation. In recent years, teachers have been sent to foreign countries and regions, such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia, South Korea, Switzerland, for academic and medical exchanges with great success.
